The Commons

Ten years later: Doak, Iverson break ground on new putting course at Ballyneal

We are excited and proud to announce the construction of a new putting course designed by Tom Doak and his associate, Eric Iverson. “The Commons” will be over an acre in size and offer a fun and challenging venue where you can relax with a drink, work on your stroke, or hopefully recover any losses from a day on the golf course.

When Doak visited Ballyneal last October he knew it wouldn’t be long before he returned. After being approached about this project by club owner, John Curlander, he immediately envisioned what will surely become a perfect compliment to the existing 18 holes. This new putting course is designed with the same architectural concept of using the natural contours of the land, a minimalist approach that signifies Doak’s style.

The bocce court and practice putting green are currently undergoing a complete transformation. Doak and Iverson are combining these two areas into one large putting surface that encompasses enough space to route a full 18-hole putting course that traverses every combination of back and forth, and up and down.

Since its establishment in 2006, Ballyneal quickly became recognized as one of Doak’s best designs, and as Curlander succinctly sums it up, “We will always be a haven for golf purists who love the game”. Similar to the existing world-class 18 holes, this new putting course will capture the essence of links-style golf and inspire creativity. The Commons will open in late summer and is destined to become the centerpiece of the Ballyneal village.
