The War on Yucca

08/13/2009

If you have ever been to Ballyneal I am sure you have had an experience with a Yucca.  It might have been an errant golf shot that left you with a hazardous lie right in the middle of one, or you ordered Yucca Chips at the Turtle Bar.  It is an amazing plant and has many uses for survival if you ever get lost looking for your ball.  They thrive in our arid climate and when you're here you can't get away from them.

During construction we spent a lot of time mechanically removing the plant where our current fairways are.  We removed thousands of Yucca trying to get as much of the root as possible because they branch extensively and are capable of producing many individual plants.  Five years later the chunks of root that were not completely removed are still trying to survive by sending shoots to the surface.  You can see this as you walk our fairways when the soil temperatures increase mainly during summer.  We hope that eventually the energy stored in the root will fizzle away and we won't have to battle the Yucca.
